The four occupants managed to safely escape but their mobile home was destroyed by a fire that began at 9:45 p.m. Monday at Paradise Mobile Home Park on Boucherie Road in West Kelowna.

In fleeing from the fire, one of the occupants had to wake up another in order to get out of the burning mobile home.

The initial firefighters arriving on the scene from the Westbank fire station were greeted by a fire that had quickly consumed the mobile home, leaving little they could do to save the structure while making sure the flames didn’t spread to other structures and nobody was trapped inside.

The initial response crew was backed up by other firefighting units from the Lakeview Heights, Glenrosa and Rose Valley fire stations.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue ultimately responded with four fire engines and one command unit. A total of 17 firefighters worked alongside the West Kelowna RCMP and BC Ambulance Service. Crews from Fortis Gas and BC Hydro attended to ensure that utilities were made safe.

The cause of the fire is believed to be smoking materials, according to West Kelowna Fire Rescue.

The fire department adds this incident is a reminder to check your smoke alarm. It can make the difference between life and death in a fire in any type of building. If you need help with your smoke detector, contact the fire department and they will ensure you have a working device in your home.
