Trial runs can be unnerving, especially when they last the whole summer.
But the District of West Kelowna is setting the stage for a successful long-term entertainment program with Music in the Park.
“We are thrilled with Music in the Park; I am overwhelmed with the response from the community,” said Annette Beaudreau, recreation and culture supervisor with the district.
“The music and entertainment has been fabulous.”
The purpose of Music in the Park is to bring out unique musical acts for free, all-ages shows from 7 to 9 p.m. every Friday throughout the summer at Memorial Park.
The program started July 6 with approximately 300 spectators. The next week 350 came out to enjoy the music. The show was canceled last Friday due to thunderstorm activity.
But the show will go on this evening with rock, pop group Scissorkick taking the stage at 8:15 p.m.
Beaudreau said that a focus of Music in the Park has been showcasing youth talent.
“We wanted to bring in our youth, so every night starts with a talented kid. It’s about a 10 minute set, but that’s been so much fun,” said Beaudreau.
Tonight’s talented kid is Bjorn Kriel and he will attempt to win over the audience at 7 p.m.
At 7:15 p.m. Fields of Green will take the stage to warm up the crowd before Scissorkick takes over.
The result is two hours of free local entertainment.
“We’re excited to bring something here to West Kelowna that our residents can come to and enjoy. It’s nice to not always have to cross the bridge for some of these great cultural experiences and entertainment.”
The district’s budget for putting on Music in the Park this year is $20,000. The program runs every Friday night until Aug. 31.
Beaudreau is hopeful that the district will continue Music in the Park in years to come.
“We would love to build on it. I don’t know that we’ll go more nights or bigger yet, we’re going to take it as it comes.
“As long as it (residents) are enjoying it, we’re going to continue to provide it.”
