West Kelowna on high flood alert

Runoff and heavy rain cause closure of Rotary Trails Park.

A combination of heavy rain and melting snow is causing flooding headaches for West Kelowna.

The flooding has now caused the closure of Rotary Trails Park in the Gellatly Bay area, until further notice. Smith Creek also ran over its banks in the Copper Ridge Drive area, but the situation remained under control as of early Thursday afternoon. No damage has been reported as a result of these incidents.

And although the district has currently lifted a local State of Emergency related to McDougall Creek flooding in the Hitchner Road Area, the municipality advises that many local creeks are nearly full or overflowing due to the deluge of rain, which started Wednesday evening, adding to seasonal runoff.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue personnel and district operations department staff continue to monitor the flooding situation.

Please call 911 if lives or properties become threatened by flood waters. To report overflowing waterways, please call 778-797-8849.
