West Kelowna target of hard luck hoax

Police say be wary of anyone in West Kelowna door knocking for hand-outs.

The hard-luck hoax is making a comeback in West Kelowna and police are warning the public to be wary of anyone door knocking in search of a hand-out.

West Kelowna RCMP received a report of a suspicious person on the 2500 block of Rhinestone Road, March 19.

The report indicated that a man in his early 20s had knocked on a resident’s door and presented himself as a neighbour and that needed money and was having car troubles, said Const Kris Clark.

“The victim knew the man was not his neighbour and was aware that he had already scammed other local residents, promptly sending him on his way,” he said.

“If you’re approached in a similar manner, don’t fall for this hard-luck scenario. Scammers will continue to sell their deceit as long as people are willing to buy it.”

You can report fraud and other scams to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
