West Kelowna: Winterfest to display Hockeyville spirit

West Kelowna hopes to further its case that it is Kraft Hockeyville by getting a good turnout for this year's Winterfest.

This weekend’s hottest event in West Kelowna will celebrate the coldest season.

Winterfest will kick off at 10 a.m. on Sunday at the Mount Boucherie Complex (2760 Cameron Road).

This year’s Winterfest will be in collaboration with West Kelowna’s bid to become Kraft Hockeyville.

Christy Staunton, community recreation coordinator with the District of West Kelowna, said that thousands typically come out for the Winterfest event.

“We usually get between 1,500 and 2,000 people. But this year, with the Hockeyville portion, I have no idea what we’re going to get for numbers,” said Staunton.

The event will feature a variety of activities for the whole family.

“The whole day is free. There are craft stations, cookie decorating, free hot dogs and pizza and Santa will come and sit with all the kids.”

Throughout the day, the ice sheet at Jim Lind Arena will be open to parent and tot skating for those six-years-old and younger. The Royal LePage rink will feature public skating for all ages.

The open skating begins at 10 a.m. and will finish at 1:45 p.m.

In the courtyard, Tim Horton’s Timbits and coffee will be served from 10:30 a.m. until supplies run out. Hot chocolate will also be available.

Hot dogs and pizza will also be served in the courtyard starting at 11 a.m.

The event will also feature a magician in the Jim Lind Lobby from 10 to 11 a.m. and Santa will arrive by fire truck at 11:30 a.m.

At 2 p.m., the annual Fire on Ice firefighter classic hockey game will take place at Royal LePage Place.

Admission to the hockey game will be granted with a non-perishable food donation to the food bank. Admission to the rest of the Winterfest events is free; however, any food bank donations will be gratefully accepted.

According to Staunton, a lot of students from Mount Boucherie Secondary School volunteer to make the event possible.
