Institu Teacher Education

The student teachers in UBCO’s early education program are gaining experience in classrooms around the Central Okanagan.

UBCO assistant professor Leyton Schnellert and early learning and literacy coordinator Donna Kozak shared a video during the Central Okanagan school district’s regular board meeting, Wednesday night, March 15, highlighting the Insitu Teacher Education.

A partnership between UBCO and the school district is currently being implemented at several elementary schools in the form of an interactive course.

“This course has really taught me the importance of collaboration,” said teacher candidate Sally Wallick.

The focus is on inclusion, literacy, and collaboration, providing teacher candidates with the opportunity to take part of their literacy methodology instruction at school sites and then practicing what has been taught through a model of co-planning, co-teaching, and co-learning with practicing teachers.

“We’re extremely lucky we do have this partnership with UBCO,” said board chairperson Moyra Baxter.

Health and safety manager recognized

Dave Cavezza was recognized for guiding the school district through the voluntary WorkSafeBC safety audit, resulting in a successful completion of the Audit. As a result, the district received a rebate of $80,000 from WorkSafeBC to continue to enhance the work safe conditions for District employees.
