Dr. John R NICHOLSON

Dr. John R. (Jack) Nicholson 1927-2008 With much sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather on Thursday, February 21, 2008.  Jack will be remembered for his great sense of humour, his indomitable spirit and unfailing determination.  Despite the health challenges he faced over his life, including the career ending aneurism he had in 1970, Jack never complained.  Always good-natured and giving, he was an inspiration to all who knew him.  To his children and grandchildren, he was and will always be remembered as a truly great man.   Jack was born in Fort William, Ontario on May 18, 1927.  In his younger years Jack was involved in many sports such as football, swimming, track and field, rowing and curling.  Upon graduation he attended the University of Manitoba where he obtained his medical degree.  During his internship at Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver, he met and wed nurse Barbara Guy.  Upon completing his graduate work in obstetrics, they moved to Terrace, B.C. where Jack practiced family medicine until 1970.  After his illness, they moved to Kelowna in 1974.  Jack is survived by his loving wife Barb, daughters Jan (Blair) Barr from Armstrong, and Debbie from Kelowna, son Gregg (Michelle) from Armstrong and grandchildren Kim, Kevin, Rebecca, Brianna and Jenna, nephews Rick (Sue) Somerville and Jeff (Angie) Somerville. Predeceased by sister Iris Somerville in 2004 and brother-in-law Burt Somerville in 2003.    The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful staff at Windsor Manor, whose love; compassion and sense of humour were unequaled.  A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on Sunday, March 9, from 1-3 pm at the Clubhouse at Sandalwood, 550 Yates Road.  Anyone who knew Jack and would like to help celebrate his life is welcome.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Jack’s name be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
