ELMA HELGASON

Born in Geurnsey, Saskatchewan to Magnus & Olina Gudlaugson.  When she was two years old, her parents decided to join the many pioneering families in moving to the Peace River Country of Alberta.  They settled near Clairmont, Alberta and Elma and her six siblings grew up on the farm there.  In 1934, she married Chris Helgason and they raised their three children on their farm near Sexsmith, Alberta.  After the children were grown & Elma was left a widow, she moved to Portland, Oregon and studied to be an LPN.  She worked in the hospital there for many years.  In 2000, she moved to Kelowna to be near her beloved family.  Elma was a poet, published two books of poetry and wrote for many magazines.  She was a free spirit, beloved by all who knew her.  She will be sadly missed by her three children; Fay (Bert), Bryan and Ron (Laurie); ten grandchildren, seventeen great great grandchildren and five great great great grandchildren and a large and loving extended family.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 9, 2009 at the Rutland Seventh Day Adventist Church, 130 Gerstmar Road, Kelowna.  Burial to follow in Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery.  Arrangements in care of Everden Rust Funeral Services, 250-860-6440
