It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Gordon Cheyne on January 13, 2018 at the age of 87.
He was born in Deloraine MB on March 9, 1930. Gord was predeceased by his wife Alice in 2010, his son Troy in 2008 and his brothers Jim and Norman.
He is survived by his loving partner of 6 years Phyllis Shkrabuik. His children: Fran Stecyk and her children Kevin, Angela (Jesse) Doyle his great grandchildren Emily & Isaac Doyle all of Vernon; Sandy (Orrin) Stephen and their children Douglas, Kathleen & Michelle of Calgary; David Cheyne and his children Kirsten & Jeremy of Abbotsford; his daughter-in-law Faith (AJ) Evenson and children Alanna, Jordan, Carlin & Asher of Calgary; his former son-in-law Jim Stecyk of Kelowna and former daughter-in-law Laura Cheyne of Abbotsford.
He is further survived by Phyllis' family and his brothers Floyd (Elsie) Cheyne and Ken Cheyne of Melita MB.
He was a member of the BC Old Time Fiddlers and Rutland United Church. Gord was the oldest of 5 boys and grew up on the family farm in Waskada, MB. He left home at an early age to work as a farm hand, later moving to Red Deer and Pincher Creek to work on the oil rigs thus began a journey west.
He then moved to Calgary where he started his career as an auto mechanic. In 1971 he relocated to Kelowna where he has been ever since. He retired in 1993 after a 34 year career as a heavy duty mechanic.
Gord loved gardening, woodworking, fiddling, travelling, camping and fishing. To his 11 grandchildren he was the best pancake maker this world has known. The family would like to thank Dr Beck and the nurses in ICU for their amazing care.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 27 at 1:30 pm, Rutland United Church, 1370 Rutland Rd North, Kelowna BC.
