MCCONNELL, MADELINE (SUE) MARY
Passed away peacefully on March 12, 2012 in St Albert AB at the age of 86.
Madeline was born in
Salvador, Saskatchewan. When she was nine, her family moved from Saskatchewan to a farm near Armstrong. She grew up there with her brothers Ed and Tony and her sister
Emma. After graduation from Armstrong High School in 1945, she moved to
Vancouver with her sister
and that is where Madeline met Gerald (Gerry) McConnell,
a military police officer and later RCMP special constable.
After they were married in 1952, Madeline faced the
challenges of creating a home through moves to Chilliwack BC, London, England, Camp Borden ON, Shiloh MB,
Vernon BC, Edmonton AB and Delta BC. Gerry served overseas in Korea and the Middle East in 1953 and in 1963 and “Sue” maintained a loving home while he was away.
On Gerry’s retirement in 1986, Gerry and Madeline moved to Kelowna BC where they pursued their mutual interests in fishing, square dancing (A-1 level), camping and travelling with the “Explorers RV Club”. Madeline was a lifelong
gardener and would spend much of each summer under her straw hat tending her garden of vegetables and flowers.
Predeceased by her husband Gerry, Madeline is survived by their son James, daughter-in-law Trudy and grandchildren Elizabeth and Thomas. Special thanks to Dr L Wiebe who provided excellent medical care over the years.
A mass will be held at St Theresa’s Catholic Parish, 750 Rutland Rd, Kelowna at 11:30 am on Monday March 19, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Fund, 4-1551 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, BC V1Y 9M9.
