Marie was born in Georgetown, British Guiana on May 7, 1928. She moved to New Toronto, Ontario as a child before the family returned to British Guiana shortly after WWII began. She lived in British Guiana until graduation from high school. Marie immigrated to Canada and completed the qualifications as a registered nurse at St. Michaels
Hospital in Toronto. Her first posting was in Kitimat, BC where she met Gordon A.R. Sharp, who was serving the community as a member of the R.C.M.P. They were married in Vancouver on January 3, 1955 and were stationed in Osoyoos, Langley, Williams Lake, Duncan, and Kamloops, BC. They retired in North Delta, followed by a move to Penticton to be closer to their daughters and their families. Marie then moved to Kelowna, BC and lived at Sun Pointe Village until she passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on December 3, 2009. She is survived by, her daughter’s Susan Heffernan and Leslie Sharp, along with grandchildren Daniel O’Leary, Tyler, Ashley and Jarad Gibbenhuck. Her
loving husband, Gordon Ray Alexander Sharp and her grandson Robert Sanderson predeceased Marie.
Her sisters Doreen Janco and Monica Schuler also survive Marie, along with her brother Joe Schuler and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Marie’s brother John Schuler and sister Ramona Ashmore predeceased her as well. Marie is remembered for her ‘sharp wit’ and her passion for good food, galas, dancing and travel. In her retirement, she enjoyed providing reflexology treatments to family and friends, exploring naturopathic medicine and keeping the Canadian government’s travails in check.
