In Loving Memory of Sheila Geis

With heart-felt sadness we announce the passing of Sheila Hazel Fullerton Geis on Monday, August 28, 2017 at the age of 87: beloved sister to Jean McCormick (Howard - predeceased in 2016), and Eva Hunter, predeceased in 1978 (Alder - predeceased in 2010); devoted mother to Brenda Huber (Franz), Denise Geis, Colin Geis (Simone), and Alastair Geis; loving grandmother to Brianna and Shantelle Huber, Katriana Witham, Matthew Ortt, Jarel Geis, Tanice, Christian, and Kyrese; endeared aunt to Rob McCormickk (Maria), Dawn Hunter (Maurice) of Calgary, Brad Hunter (Sharon), and Paul Hunter (Birgitte) of Whitehorse; devoted friend to Sonya Amundson; and adopted mother to Sabrina MacCormack. Sheila was most proud to be the mother of Kelowna’s first triplets born on February 3, 1961 at Kelowna General Hospital.

Sheila was born in Kingston, Ontario on November 6, 1929. Her passion was the card game of duplicate bridge which she played for over 75 years becoming a Bronze Life Master. She loved to travel to Hawaii, her favorite destination, and cherished all her special vacations there. She also loved sports including horse-back riding, gymnastics, bowling, and water-skiing. In 1952-53, she carried a flag on water skis with five other girls behind a boat as a fly-past for the opening ceremonies of the Kelowna Regatta. She especially loved swimming and swam with oxygen up until the age of 86 with her daughter (Brenda) carrying the oxygen tank (she was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2014).

Sheila was a registered nurse graduating from the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary in 1952. She nursed at Kelowna General Hospital from 1952-1990. She was the first recovery room nurse at KGH opening the first unit in 1953. While raising her children she worked surgery and psychiatry, then started full-time in ICU, retiring from 2E Telemetry in 1990.

Sheila touched the hearts of so many with her special way of being. She was blessed with a genuine, nurturing, uplifting, and generous soul; a welcoming smile; and a heart of gold. Words cannot express how much she will be missed by her loving family and her many dear friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 18,

at 12:30pm at Sun Pointe Village (4th floor lounge),

700 Rutland Road N. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the pulmonary fibrosis society.
