Left turn lanes a low higher speed

I might not share Wayne Harris’s impatience at the traffic lights (More Left Turn Lights Are Needed Along Harvey, Jan. 23) but I do agree with his suggestion that left turn lights would make the critical intersections on Highway 97 safer.

I might not share Wayne Harris’s impatience at the traffic lights (More Left Turn Lights Are Needed Along Harvey, Jan. 23) but I do agree with his suggestion that left turn lights would make the critical intersections on Highway 97 safer.

I often drive in Palm Springs, California, and I marvel at its speed limits, which are as high as 50 miles-per-hour (80-kilometres-per hour) in the city limits.

The reason they can do this safely is because almost every intersection has left turn lights and so you can safely drive at the higher speeds, confident that no one is going to make a sudden left turn across your path.
