To the editor:
City-owned lakefront properties on Abbot Street, north of Cedar Avenue.
I find it disappointing that Kelowna City Council is, once again, opening an issue that has long been decided.
The city purchased these properties, on behalf of the citizens it serves, for a future waterfront park: This is clear from internal city documents related to the purchases that consistently refer to the area as the “Cedar Avenue Park Site.” Press reports at the time also indicate that the city was clear about its intention for the property to become a park. The current Official Community Plan also supports this aim with two of its goals stating:
7. Provide Spectacular Parks. Provide spectacular parks where people pursue active, creative and healthy lifestyles close to where they live and work.
8. Include Distinctive and Attractive Neighbourhoods. Develop distinctive and attractive neighbourhoods and urban centres with safe, accessible public spaces that enhance investment.
My overriding concern is that council make every effort to preserve our waterfront access for the enjoyment of future generations of citizens and visitors—for council now to rezone the properties for commercial development will be a betrayal of the purpose for which this land was purchased.
