International men’s fastball will be showcased Wednesday night at King’s Stadium in Kelowna.

At 7 and 9 p.m., the Argentina national junior under-21 team will take on the Kelowna All-Stars in an exhibition doubleheader.

The Argentinians are the reigning world U21 champions, having won the title last November in Parana, Argentina.

The Argentinians, who recently completed at an international tournament in Saskatoon, will play in the upcoming Vancouver Challenge, before heading to Quad City, Illinois for the International Softball Congress tournament, Aug 10 to 17.

Local fastball pitcher Rich Haldane, who has competed at the world championship level, said local ball fans are in for a treat.

“It’s a huge opportunity to showcase the sport and show that it’s still happening here in town,” said Haldane. “King’s Stadium is a beautiful venue, and to have the world junior champions from the junior level come here to play will be great. These kids throw hard and hit the ball very well.”

Kelowna’s all-star teams will be comprised of players from the five clubs in the Kelowna Major Men’s Fastball League who Haldane expects will be competitive against the touring South Americans.

“There are a lot of good players here in Kelowna and the Okanagan, guys who have played at the senior A level,” said Haldane. “We’ll have our work cut out, but we should do pretty well.”

Tickets for the doubleheader are $5 each. Admission is free for kids 15-and-under, or minor baseball or softball player, male or female. Organizers are encouraging young players to wear their team jersey.

Gates open Wednesday at 6 p.m.
