Kelowna medals in snowboarding

Competitors head down the course in the boys snowboard cross event Saturday at Big White during the International Children's Games.

A pair of Kelowna athletes reached the medal podium in snowboard competition on Saturday at Big White at the International Children’s Games.

Kelowna’s Mica Bot took silver while Kayla Shepard won the bronze in the girls snowboard cross final. The race was won by Katharina Geley of Team Innsbruck.

The boys snowboard cross final had Sebastien Retord of Team Montreux taking the gold, with Simon Johnston and Andrew Richardson of Team Woollahra, Australia finishing second and third.

Dakota Martin of Team Kelowna just missed his second straight podium result, finishing fourth.

In snowboard slopestyle competition on Thursday, Dakota Martin and Ben Cousins took the gold and bronze medals, respectively.

In ski cross, it was gold and silver for Team Vevey, Switzerland and Team Innsbruck, Austria in both boys and girls races.  The bronze in girls ski cross went to Team Maribor, Slovenia and Team Vevey took bronze in the boys race.

Girls hockey

Team Hamilton defeated Kelowna 3-1 in the gold medal game in girls hockey Sunday at Memorial Arena.

Kelowna advanced by defeating Team Kamloops 2-1 Sunday morning in the semifinal in sudden-death overtime

The winning goal was scored by 12-year- Abby Cook with 1:12 remaining in sudden death.

Team Hamilton advanced to the final with a 9-0 win over Team Strathmore.

In the bronze medal game Sunday, Kamloops defeated Strathmore 7-3.

Boys hockey

The boys gold medal hockey game will feature two Central Okanagan teams, with Team West Kelowna taking on Team Lake Country Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Memorial arena.

In what has to be considered an upset, second place West Kelowna defeated Team Windsor 5-3 at Rutland Arena.  Brett Mennear led West Kelowna with two goals.

Team Windsor had finished first in Pool A with a 3-0 record.  They will play Team Kelowna in this afternoon’s bronze medal game at 12:15 p.m. at Rutland arena.

Team Lake Country advanced to the gold final with a 4-2 win over Team Kelowna.

Kelowna rebounded to win the bronze medal Sunday with a 6-5 victory over Windsor.

Kelowna came back from a 5-4 deficit in the third period. Josh Blanchard scored a hat trick in the win.

Curling

At the Kelowna Curling Club, game four draws were completed Saturday.  In the big girls game of the day matching undefeated Waterloo and Whitehorse, Team Waterloo remains with a perfect 4 and 0 after defeating Whitehorse 10-1. 

Team Kelowna picked up their first win in girls curling, beating Team Kamloops 12-2.

In boys curling, Team Coquitlam, 4 and 0 and Team Seoul, 3 and 0 are the only undefeated teams.

Cross Country skiing

In the final Cross Country event at Telemark in West Kelowna, Team Gorje proved again they are tops in nordic skiing.  Gorje, Slovenia, again took both gold and silver in both boys and girls 3.5km Free Technique. West Kelowna’s Carson MacKenzie won bronze

On opening day, Team Kelowna won gold in the mixed 4 x 3.5 km free relay. Gareth Williams, Hayden Conlin-Mouat, Madeleine Ertel and Veronica Dimova were first with a time of 0:39:47.0  The silver medal went to Team Cleveland with a time of 0:46:35.1.
