Heading into the second and final round of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club’s men’s open on the weekend, Jason Monteleone knew he would have to fire a low round to get himself into the winner’s circle.

A former winner of the open, Monteleone carded an even par 72 to open the tournament, but found himself trailing by four strokes heading into the final round on Sunday.

Four players had shot opening round scores of 68 to hold the lead after the first round. But on Sunday it was Monteleone who would emerge from a tight pack to take the championship after firing a six under par 66, the lowest round of the event.

Monteleone’s two day total of 138 was one stroke better than Vancouver’s Keith Martin, who also opened with a 72 and followed that with a 67 to finish one stroke behind Monteleone.

“It was a great tournament, great weather and Jason just came from behind with a great round to beat everyone,” said Kelowna Golf and Country Club manager David Walker.

There were 146 players in total competing at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club and a lot of solid golf was played. It was one of the closest men’s opens in recent memory with the top 10 players all finishing within six shots of each other.

To open Sunday’s final round, Kelowna’s Matt Palahniuk got the excitement started when he fired a hole-in-one on the downhill par three 9th hole, winning $5,000 for his efforts.

Excitement and anticipation grew from there as viewers flooded the course to watch the final groups finish their rounds.

“The weekend was a great success filled with great golf, lots of volunteers, smiling faces, and good company,” said Walker. “Thank you to all of those who volunteered their time to help the tournament run smooth and efficient. We’re already looking forward to next year’s men’s open and to see if Monteleone can hold onto the title.
