Zac Funk inks 3-year entry-level contract with Washington

Coldstream product Zac Funk has made it to the big leagues.

The Prince George Cougars forward and WHL’s leading scorer in 2023-2024 has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Washington Capitals, the NHL club announced Friday.

“I am very grateful and honoured for this opportunity with the Washington Capitals and am looking forward to the next chapter of my hockey career,” Funk said.

The 20-year-old has erupted for a career-best season in the Northern Capital, scoring 56 goals and 43 assists in 58 games.

Funk has a league-high eight hat tricks this year while leading the WHL in goals and powerplay markers (25).

He was selected by the Calgary Hitmen with the 43rd pick in the second round of the 2018 WHL Draft.

Funk suited up 129 games with the Hitmen over parts of five seasons before being traded to Prince George in the 2021-22 season.

The six-foot, 200-pound winger has amassed 108 goals and 95 assists for 203 points in 218 WHL games.

His annual NHL contract will be worth $810,000 and $82,500 in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Funk and the B.C. division-leading Cougars (40-15-0-3) host the Spokane Chiefs on Friday at 7 p.m.
