Acro gymnasts from Kelowna win at Calfornia State Championships

Four members of the Okanagan Gymnastics Centre returned home from the Golden State with gold in their possession.

Acro gymnasts Jackson Peters, Jacob Wong, Ava Clark and Sara Ross all made their way to the podium at the California State Championship held just outside San Francisco.

Coached by Shawna De Leske, Peters and Wong captured top prize in the Level 10 Men’s Pair event, while Clark and Ross combined their talents to strike gold in the Junior Olympic Level 8 Women’s Pair.

The four athletes were coming off a recent trip to the Vegas Acro Cup in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The two teams more than held their own over the two-day event in Calfornia against some of the toughest competition from around the world, scoring well throughout.

“We came home from Vegas and I looked at the scores and strategized how to improve our artistry which should increase our scores,” said coach Shawna De Leske. “We disassembled each of the four routines and made some tweaks and it worked out very nicely. The scores reflected the hard work the athletes and coaches put into their routines to which each of us is very proud.”
