Song Sparrow Hall swings to the sweet science

Salmon Arm's Whizbang Boxing made another mark in amateur boxing over the weekend with its first BC Boxing-sanctioned event.

The local boxing club welcomed fighters from Nelson, Rutland, the Lower Mainland and Edmonton for the inaugural BC Interior Series Amateur Boxing event, which took place at Song Sparrow Hall on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The evening kicked off with Whizbang's Genevieve Delaney and Daylen Zachary sparring in an exhibition match. The near sell-out audience was treated to eight bouts in total, with the finale a match-up featuring Whizbang's Landon Beaseley taking on Miguel Wood from Rutland's Los Gatos Locos. The fight went three rounds with Wood being declared the winner.

The evening was a win for Whizbang owners Shelley and Shaun Desautels.

"We're really happy with how it went; everyone we talked to said it was a fantastic event," said Shelley.

While the event was a first for the Desautels and Whizbang, it won't be the last. The couple want to host a number of events annually to give Interior boxers another opportunity to get into the ring. Shelley said they're planning their next one for March of next year and, given the success of Saturday's event, it's likely it will also be held at Song Sparrow.

"It was good exposure… that's huge, it showed we're a legit club, we put on special events, for us that made it worth it," said Shelley.
