Families often play a crucial role in an Olympic athlete’s success and make huge sacrifices, yet family members tend to be a forgotten element in an Olympic success story. In 2010 Canada is sending its greatest athletes to compete in the Games and Petro-Canada is sending their greatest fans —their families.

Petro-Canada’s Canadian Athlete Family Program will host and accommodate Kelowna’s ski cross athlete Kelsey Serwa’s parents, Terri and Brad Serwa (who also live in Kelowna), for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, which means they don’t have to worry about any last minute accommodations or event tickets.

This is a unique and much needed program that will host and accommodate two immediate family members of every participating Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athlete during the Games in Vancouver. Approximately 500 family members of Canadian athletes will benefit from this program, which will include accommodation for four nights, meals (daily breakfast, food buffet and late night snack), event tickets to watch their athlete compete and ground transportation to and from events, with dedicated shuttle buses to various venues.

While many factors can influence an athlete’s performance during competition, family support is paramount when it comes to Olympic and Paralympic success. Yet for many Canadian athletes, high accommodation costs, ticket prices and availability often keep family members at home, rather than cheering on their loved ones live from the stands.

Petro-Canada’s Family Program ensures that the athletes’ families are at the 2010 Winter Games cheering them on.

This program offers benefits for athletes as well because it helps them focus on the competition during a very stressful time, while knowing that all their parents needs are taken care of.

Petro-Canada has a proud 21-year history of supporting Canadian athletes dating back to the Calgary 1988 Olympic Winter Games and is currently a National Partner for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The company developed the Canadian Athlete Family Program in partnership with the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Committees and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).
