Warriors head to BCHL Showcase to kick off season

Chilliwack again to play host to BCHL teams at the annual Showcase

For the third consecutive year, Chilliwack gets set to welcome the entire BC Hockey League for 16 games to kick off the 2014/2015 BCHL Schedule.

The BCHL Showcase, which will see each of its member teams play two games that count in the regular season standings, in front of hundreds of NHL, NCAA, and CIS scouts, gets underway on Friday afternoon.

For the West Kelowna Warriors, mixed results have occured the last two seasons, winning both games at the inaugural Showcase, and dropping both games last year.

This time around, the Warriors will face off against the Defending BCHL Champion Coquitlam Express (Friday, 7:00 pm), and the Nanaimo Clippers (Sunday, 2:30 pm).

The Clippers and Warriors have tangled in some memorable games recently, most noteworthy the 2-2 tie on January 5th last season, where the Warriors tied it up late, and Jayson Argue made 49 saves for Nanaimo.

For Friday nights matchup, Rylan Ferster knows that playing the defending Champions will be tough.

“They’ll have set the tone and built a culture, and they’ll have some guys on that team that won a championship, so you have to look at them as being the Champions until someone knocks them off.”

The other storyline that people talk about with the BCHL Showcase is the numerous number of scouts and the potential distractions. For returning defenseman Mac Ferner, it’s not about the individual play that gets players noticed.

“The scouts want to see how a good teammate plays, so I think its more how the team plays and not about individual efforts throughout.” he said recently.
