Despite first appearing on the big screen almost forty years ago, the movie Slapshot, starring Paul Newman, continues to be recognized as an iconic symbol of hockey, even today.
And while Newman was the name on the marquee that drew eyes to theatres at the time, it was three unknowns who lit up the screen and helped propel the movie to the legendary status it now enjoys among hockey circles.
The long-haired, reckless Hanson Brothers, in their now familiar hockey taped black, became the dark, comedic relief that gave the film it’s unique, albeit raw, aggressive character.
On March 1st, at 7pm, the West Kelowna Warriors and Ultimate Hockey and Skate are bringing hockey’s favourite triplets to Royal LePage Place as special guests for the Warriors final home game of the season.
“Honestly, I didn’t even think they’d agree to come here when we first contacted them,” said Andrew Deans the Warriors director of operations. “They’re booked all over the world, all year long and appear before huge crowds at games. I figured there was no chance. But we got lucky. We wanted to do something special this year for our fans at the last game of the season. They’re huge fan favourites everywhere they go. We’re sure we’re going to fill the house on March 1st when they show up. These guys put on a great show. It’ll be one for the books, that’s for sure.”
Earlier in the day, The Hansons will appear at Ultimate Hockey and Skate in West Kelowna, the event’s co-sponsors, for an exclusive meet and greet with fans and to sign autographs.
Tyler Nowek, co-owner of Ultimate Hockey is looking forward to the big day.
“These guys are beauties. Whether you’re an 80 year-old fan of the sport or an 18 year-old, everyone who loves hockey has a special place in their heart for the Hanson Brothers. As soon as Andrew approached us with the idea, we were all over it. It’s going to be amazing. I can’t wait.”
