Both the boys’ and girls’ curling teams from Kelowna Secondary School qualified for the B.C. School Sports Provincial Curling Championships by going undefeated this past weekend at regional playdowns held at the McArthur Island Curling Rink in Kamloops.
The boys’ team beat South Kamloops 5-3 and North Kamloops 5-4 on Saturday before beating OKM 7-2 in the semi-finals on Sunday morning and then finishing off the weekend by beating Sahali from Kamloops 7-3 in the finals. The boys’ team included the following: Skip-Logan Miron (Grade 12); Third-Ewan Murray (Grade 12); Second-Ramsay Murray (Grade12); Lead-Bryan Cresswell (Grade 12) and Coach-Justin Nillson.
This is the third year in a row that Logan, Ewan and Ramsay have qualified for provincials and the second year in a row for Bryan. The team came 5th in 2015 and 6th in 2016.
The KSS girls’ team beat South Kamloops 10-4, North Kamloops 8-2 and George Elliot 9-8 on Saturday. On Sunday morning they beat Sahali 6-5 to win the playdowns. The girls’ team included the following: Skip-Katelyn McGillivray (Grade 10); Ana Trigalet (Grade 12); Erika Ellis (Grade 8 at KLO); Naoimi Hayward (Grade 9 at Dr. Knox) and Coach-Bob Harris
The Provincial Curling Championships will be held in Smithers March 2 to 4, 2017.
The other Central Okanagan Schools that participated in the playdowns also played very well.
The George Elliot girls’ team beat South Kamloops 9-8 but lost 11-5 to Sahali, 7-2 to North Kamloops and 7-6 to Kelowna Secondary. The KSS game was decided with a very close measurement in an extra end with George Elliot showing they will be contenders for the future. Their team included the following: Skip-Abby Otteson (Grade 9); Third-Jaden Lloyd (Grade 8) ; Second-Laiken Gibson (Grade 8); Lead-Ella Casparis (Grade 7) and Coach-Dave McGarry.
The OKM Boys’ team was also a very young team that competed well for first time curlers and were close in every game. They lost to Sahali 9-8 and beat Westsyde 5-2 in the round robin, beat North Kamloops 6-3 in the quarter-finals and lost to KSS 7-2 in the semi finals. Their team included the following: Skip-Spencer Ursel (Grade 10); Third-Ethan Loewen (Grade 10); Second-Kyle Butterworth (Grade 10; Lead-Brady Diduck (Grade 10) and Alternate-Seth Loewen.
