Raising awareness, funds for mental health with annual fundraiser bike ride in Kelowna

A large number of people registered in the last 48 hours before the ride

The Payton and Dillon Budd Memorial Ride was back in Kelowna June 11 and bigger than before.

Events specialist for the Canadian Mental Health Association Kelowna Sarah Wallace said they had an overwhelming number of people sign up last minute.

“Our numbers in the last 48 hours skyrocketed. Last year was our first year after COVID and we saw 247 riders. This year we saw 450 riders.”

The annual ride encourages conversations on suicide awareness and prevention while also raising funds for people struggling with mental illness locally.

“Both Payton and Dillon Budd passed away by suicide. Today is a day to honour them and honour other folks that are celebrating family members and friends as well. We’re here to raise money for programs and services at CMHA Kelowna.”

Particpants could choose from multiple routes, from a five kilometre walk to a 100 kilometre ride. Each participant received a medal.

After the ride, people were treated to a little after party with massages for the riders, food and coffee, live music, and games for the kids.

By noon on June 11, over $109,000 had been raised. The fundraiser goal is $150,000.
