Ballet Kelowna to present 2 world premieres

Turning Point includes the world premiers of ‘Delicate Fire’ and ‘Mustard’

Ballet Kelowna takes to the stage Feb. 16 and 17 to present two world premieres.

CEO and Artistic Director Simone Orlando choreographed for the company for the first time in four years.

‘Delicate Fire’ is inspired by the music of Canadian composer Jocelyn Morlock and is centred around the myth of Aphrodite and Adonis.

“I had the honour of working with Jocelyn on a number of projects through my choreographic career,” Orlando said, noting the Morlock passed away in March 2023. “But I first became aware of her music back in 2009 when I was creating a piece for Ballet B.C. dancers through a fellowship through the New York Choreographic Institute.”

The second piece is called ‘Mustard’ choreographed by Robert Stephen.

Stephen’s piece is an adaptation of an award-winning play by Kat Sandler and focuses on imaginary friends.

“One of the things that really drew me to Mustard is its childlike sense of wonder,” Stephen said. He described it as a family drama and a work that both ballet lovers and newcomers can enjoy.

The double bill “Turning Point” will be presented at the Kelowna Community Theatre. Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office.
