“Leather is naturally a thick and durable material, often lasting longer than fabric, with the added benefit of getting that beautiful patina look as it ages,” Sturrock says. “Some fabrics can stain easier but new products like defender fabric or performance fabrics can help ensure longevity in fabric furniture as well.”
Which is more comfortable?
How someone perceives comfort is very personal and as a result it’s impossible to say one material is more comfortable than another. Fabric will provide a softer, warmer and overall ‘cosier’ experience while leather is often firmer and cooler to the touch which can be beneficial if you find you’re often overheated in your home, Sturrock says.
Which is easier to clean?
Regardless of which material you opt for in the end, both will require regular cleaning to keep them looking their best. Leather furniture is more stain resistant but again new fabric products, such as defender fabric, can offer superior stain and wear protection that is comparable to that of leather.
“As for day to day cleaning, leather is easier to clean than fabric,” Sturrock says. “But when it comes to selecting the right furniture for your home, cleaning is only a small part of a much bigger picture.”

Fabric couches are more affordable than leather couches and are often considered to be more comfortable, says Sturrock. Fabric also comes in a much wider range of colours, textures and designs. Leather is easier to clean and can be longer lasting than some fabrics. It also offers rich full-bodied colour that can make any room feel classy and inviting.
“It really comes down to personal preference,” Sturrock says. “Each home is different and it’s important to consider lifestyle and other factors like how you’ll be using a particular piece of furniture.”
