RCMP and the BC Coroner's Service are investigating a fatal collision involving two passenger vehicles and a commercial vehicle on Highway 97 in Kelowna overnight.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a three vehicle collision Feb. 29  at 9:08 p.m. on Highway 97 at the intersection of Edwards Road.

"According to witnesses at the scene a black Mitsubishi Lancer was travelling northbound on Highway 97 when it struck a Ken-worth tractor trailer semi which was southbound on the highway turning left onto Edwards Road," said Const. Jesse O'Donaghey,in a press release.

"Preliminary findings are that after colliding with the semi, the Mitsubishi then struck a Chevrolet Avalanche, stopped on Edwards Road at the lights, before striking a telephone pole."

The injuries to the driver of the Mitsubishi proved to be fatal who sadly perished at the scene. The driver has since been identified, however the drivers name, age and gender are being withheld pending the proper notification of next of kin.

Two others were transported to hospital with what police describe as minor, non-life threatening injuries.

The highway was closed for several hours and traffic was diverted while an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist conducted a detailed scene analysis. The causal factors are not yet known.

Kelowna RCMP Municipal Traffic Services, and Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstructionist Services, continue to assist the BC Coroners Service in the investigation.
