OD may have caused crash, say Mounties

A black sedan had struck cyclist then drove on and into another vehicle before coming to a stop.

Mounties say an overdose may have caused a Tuesday night crash.

On Tuesday Aug. 8, 2017 at 10:08 p.m., the Kelowna RCMP responded to a report of a collision in the 2600 block of Ethel Street in Kelowna.

Initial reports indicated that a black sedan had struck cyclist then drove on and into another vehicle before coming to a stop.

“Upon police and ambulance attendance, it was determined that the 49-year-old male cyclist was struck from behind by a black sedan, which continued southbound and collided with a second vehicle,” Cpl. Dan Moskaluk, in a press release.

“Witnesses stated that the two occupants which caused the collisions were found unconscious. The 40-year-old male suspect driver and his 38-year-old female passenger adults were cared for by BC Ambulance Services and Kelowna Fire Dept with doses of Naloxone being administered to the pair.”

The male driver was placed under investigation for impaired driving, with the pair being transported to hospital from the scene.

The male suspect failed to comply with the investigators’ requests and was issued a 24 hr driving prohibition and a Promise to Appear with pending charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and refusal to comply with a demand.

The male is set to appear in court on Nov. 30.
