UBCO engineering students tackle threat of climate change, wildfires

The Design and Innovation Day symposium is taking place across the UBCO campus on April 12

An engineering showcase at UBC Okanagan campus on April 12, will feature innovative projects designed to tackle the pressing threat of climate change and the need for sustainable development.

Nearly 700 students from first to fourth year will be showcasing their projects at the UBCO campus in two separate engineering events.

First year students were given open-ended guidelines for the project but were directed to place an emphasis on devising strategies to mitigate the escalating threat climate change with an emphasis on of wildfire mitigation.

The first year students will compete in a symposium at the Engineering Management and Education Building from 10 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on April 12.

Ray Taheri, Ph.D., Professor of Teaching at UBCO said the focal point of the design challenge revolves around the multifaceted issue of climate change, particularly the escalating threat of wildfires.

Taheri said the engineering students have worked hard on the projects and are excited to showcase their work.

“The students are vying for recognition and distinction in the competitive arena,” said Taheri.

The fourth year students were challenged to create a capstone project that focuses on sustainability to present at the symposium. The project is a degree requirement for all graduating engineering students and this year’s focus is on manufacturing, biocompatible systems, complex systems, infrastructure and sustainability.

The Capstone Showcase will be held at the KF Centre for Excellence on the UBCO campus from 1 - 5 p.m., with award presentations beginning at 4:40 p.m.

“This year’s event, steeped in the overarching theme of climate change, encapsulated a profound commitment to addressing pressing global challenges through the lens of engineering excellence,” said Taheri.
