VIZZUTTI, ELSO

Elso Vizzutti died on April 29, 2016 in Kelowna, B.C., at the age of 89.  He is survived by his loving wife Bruna, daughter and son-in-law Laurie and Barry Porrelli, son Giordano (Gord) Vizzutti and daughter-in-law Patricia Rockwell, grandsons Jordan Porrelli and Daniel Vizzutti, granddaughter-in-law Carrie Vizzutti and great grandchildren Kayden and Aliyah Vizzutti, all of Kelowna and West Kelowna, B.C.  Also survived by his brother and sister-in-law Ottone and Anna Vizzutti of Calgary, Alberta.  Predeceased by his parents Domenico and Celeste Vizzutti, sisters Angelina and Gemma, brothers Mario, Beppi and Alfonso and granddaughter Kristen Porrelli. Elso was born in Nimis, a village in Northern Italy on July 16, 1926.  He is remembered by all who knew him as an unfailingly happy and energetic man who was never without a song, whistle or a quick joke to lighten any mood.  Like so many of his generation he endured Nazi occupation, unspeakable war crimes and severe poverty to eventually become an economic refugee from post-war Europe; a group of men and women who emigrated and played a vital role in the building of Western Canada in the

post-war era.  He and his brothers built railways, airports, highways and houses to name a few. With vigour and

vitality he embraced his new country by immersing

himself in the language, history, politics and landscape

of Alberta and B.C.  In 1954 he asked his one true love,

Bruna Petrossi to leave England and join him in his

adventure and, based on just one previous date, she did. The family playground was always the mountains.

He loved the scenery, the air and the cold rushing waters.  Until well into his 80’s he would regularly hike to the

top of mountains in West Kelowna just to enjoy the view.  His love of good food, wine and family will be missed most of all. A private family service will be held at Kelowna

Memorial Cemetery with a celebration of life to take place

on Elso’s 90th birthday, July 16, 2016.  Details to follow.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Elso’s name to Central Okanagan Hospice House: www.hospicecoha.org.
