I’m sure there are not many people who have 300 stuffed animals lying around their home. Local long-time resident Andy Schwab does. After many years of collecting the toys, he donated close to 300 stuffed animals of all types, shapes and sizes to the food bank last week. Many children had a very happy Christmas with this huge heartfelt donation.
Long-time downtown Kelowna business, Tripke Bakery at 567 Bernard Ave. has closed its doors. The café bakery that also had an outdoor patio is owned and operated by Rick Kormish who purchased the business from the Tripke family over 25 years ago. The Tripke bakery location in Glenmore at 538 Yates Road will continue to operate as a bakery but not have a café.
Celebrating their 25th anniversary is Monashee Adventure Tours, owned and operated by lead guide and trailhead Ed Kruger, and now offering the Myra Trestles 365 days a year.
New for the 2017 winter season is the Wonder of Winter Snowshoe Adventure Tours of Myra Canyon. Lexis Dollevoet was the co-owner at Vivid Hair Studio at #2 – 2925 Pandosy St. Lexis has now bought out her business partner and changed the name of the salon to Back Bar Beauty at the same address. Several students from Okanagan College’s School of Business will be spending their winter break preparing to compete in the final round of Canada’s oldest and most prestigious case competition, Queen’s University Inter-Collegiate Business Competition. Congratulations to Pip Dryden of Okanagan College Kelowna on winning the three-hour short story contest titled This Time. It was an appropriate name for a winning story, considering the contest is all about time – 180 minutes precisely.
The seventh annual contest took place across all four college campuses and writers were up against the clock with only three hours to create and edit an original short story while incorporating a secret phrase revealed at the competitions start. This year’s phrase was “under the weather.”
Trustee Moyra Baxter has been appointed chairperson of the Board of Education for the Central Okanagan Public Schools for the upcoming year. Board of Education appointed Terry-Lee Beaudry, deputy superintendent of schools and Eileen Sadlowski, assistant secretary-treasurer as scrutineers.
Trustee Deb Butler was appointed as vice-chairperson of the Board of Education for the first term of the 2017 school year and Trustee Lee Mossman was appointed as vice-chairperson for the second term of the 2017 school year. The BC School Trustees Association (BCSTA) Provincial Council representative is Trustee Lee-Ann Tiede with Trustee Julia Fraser as the alternate. The BC Public School Employer’s Association — Bargaining Representative Council is Trustee Butler with Tiede as alternate.

Nominations are now being accepted for the City of Kelowna’s 42nd Annual Civic and Community Awards. The awards recognize outstanding individuals and organizations whose contributions and achievements brought recognition to the city in 2016.
Nominations are due Friday, Feb. 17 and can be submitted by email or hard copy.
